UPDATE Memory : 10 Significant things!

10 Significant Things in My Life

We have been asked to blog about 10 significant things in our life as part of thinking about the Memory project.

It took me a while to come up with just 10 as when I started thinking about it I managed to come up with many more but I have narrowed it down to the following 10 things:

  1. The birth of my daughter, I created life, I nurtured it into being and I still help her grow, learn and in the future help her fend for herself.
  2. Meeting my husband, without meeting him I would not be where or who I am now, he inspires, encourages and supports my decisions and failures.
  3. Getting married, I simply never thought I would, so much so that when I used to think about it I glosses over the actual idea of it and just go to the part about being married with children, so who knew.
  4. My grandfather dying, on my birthday, it’s not a nice one but its a big one for me and significant for who I think I mentally am.
  5. My Great grandmother passing, she was like my Grandmother as my actual Grandmother was not around and I still miss our chats today, as I got older I found it easier to talk and relate to her as she has such a wealth of information and love.
  6. My childminder who was like a second Mum to me at points in my life dying and being told she has Terminal Cancer, I don’t think I have ever cried so hard, with other people deaths it was either expected or I was to young to feel it totally but with this I thought she owed be around forever.
  7. GettIng an A in Art at GCSE, as no one thought i could do it, and at least I have one A to show off!
  8. The first argument I had with Becky Merriman as now looking back at it four years ago it is the reason we are friends because she is so passionate about things that you know it’s a good thing when she argues with you.
  9. My mother getting ill in 2001, it was the first time I thought I was not going ot see her again in the way is was but in fact she came out of the situation changed, for the better, a better outlook on life.
  10. My dad telling me how proud he was of me for getting into University and then congratulating me when I told him we were expecting our second child.

Trying out different ideas.

Practical work and research for Spectacle

My previous post talked about an idea I was playing with involving taking images of the fair that come to my home town in Banbury every October. I previously notes that I have taken images at the fair the year before and came out with varying results. This year I wanted to reproduce some of the work I had done but I also wanted to expand on this. I used similar techniques to get the images I wanted but of different attractions. I also tried a different approach to seeing the fair which I will explain later.

I intend to alter this image before using it but I wanted to display it first in the form in which it was orginally captured. Banbury Fair October 2009

I intend to alter this image before using it but I wanted to display it first in the form in which it was originally captured. Banbury Fair October 2009

Banbury fair last three days, this image was taken on the final evening after two days and nights of deciding what images I wanted and where the best places would be to get the shots I wanted. I also used the other two days and evening to collect other data such as sounds and some more generic images of the fair.

Last year I took a lot of shots that were focused on singular attractions. I felt that this image could capture the overall feel of the event as a whole. I set up the camera in a position to allow me to get a good view of at least three rides in the foreground with two rides in the background. I also wanted to get people within the shot.

I had to think carefully about the techniques I was using to capture the effect of the light because of the fact I wanted people in the shot aswell. The slower shutter speed I used the more distorted the images of the people would be. To combat this I used the two days before the final evening to find a location that had rides with small children in it and somewhere where people would have space to gather for a conversation longer than say 30 seconds. I looked for a location with children’s rides because I noticed parents tended to stand still watching their children go round and round. I also knew from living in the town that the particular area where the shot was taken was a favorite hang out for groups of teenagers who mill around. I also used a slightly faster shutter speed than in some of the other shots. After last years experimentation with this style of shooting I used a tripod from the very beginning.

I want to add some after effects to this image and see where I go but I wanted to display it as it was captured and to document some of the thinking behind the shot.

This image was taken in October 2009 at the Banbury Fair. This year I decided even before the fair arrived in town that I wanted to continue with the technique I started using a year ago but that I wanted to be braver. After looking up some of the following research I decided to try expanding my technique to using a very long shutter speed to try and get more interesting light effects. I was aware that using longer shutter speeds would increase the margin of error with my photography because of the factor of moving objects other than the subject in the line of sight of the camera could disrupt the intended effect and take emphasis away from the intended image.

Research into Painting with Light:

I found this website by doing a Google search and found it to be very informative on different techniques that can be classed as painting with light. It also leads me to other peoples work and experiments with this technique, some of which I have also added to my list of research.

http://www.diyphotography.net/painting_with_light

That site lead me to the following YouTube post that is animation using the painting with light technique

I found this animation to be really inspiring; I want to experiment with this technique. It seems to have a very linier line of progression without a familiar story line so it also seems quite surreal.

I have previously attempted stop motion animation using flash, I really enjoyed doing it and turned out to be quite successful for me at the time. I embedded that particular piece into a webpage that was styled around the animation to give it greater effect. This is one of the background pages used on the website that I made for the stop motion animation.

This was another one of the pages, I used photoshop to write the majority of the text so that I could have more control over the style of the writing as I found some of the font choices with HTML limiting.

I would like to improve on my previous techniques by making it less surreal and with a clearer linear plot line, that could be easily followed by the audience. I would have liked to show on this post the stop motion animation I made but for some reason I can not find a compatible version of the file to upload on to WordPress.

I also found the following website, scroll down towards the bottom and you will find the images get more and more interesting:
This was a particular image that I liked because it reminds me of some paintings by classical artists. This image is by a photographer called Dean Chamberlain. I felt like I could stare at this image for hours and still find something inspiring about it.
The light affects reminded me of some of the more biblical imagery painted by classical artists but also reflects some of the more modern pieces.

I also found the following image on the same site, that lead me to the creator Toby Keller’s web page, where I viewed his work. This reminded me I had taken a similar image of light that I found really inspiring.

You can find this image and many more by the ceator at the following link:  http://www.burnblue.com/

The following image is one I have taken, it is not of the same callabour but it has a similar inspiration behind the above picture and of others you can see on Keller’s webpage.

I also wanted to look at peoples work that is not nesesarely meant to be professional, a guy who posts on flicker commented on the original website I mentioned talking about different techniques to get the same effect.

This image was found when researching painting with light. The creator Samdanpson (screen name on flicker) commented on another persons work stating that very many people use glow sticks to produce work simlar to this but he was using laser pointers to create the affects seen on his uploaded images on flicker.

My research into this technique (currently brief) has given me some brilliant inspiration and I will post up my ideas on a separate post as I have noted down a lot on this post. I am please with how the work I have done over the last week has turned out and will post more of it on this blog as I also collected sound and want to wash the sound with the images. I however might not spend as much time on that as I would like to explore some of the other ideas I currently have cooking in my head. Taking advice I received from both Jonathan Shaw (in the first year) and Jonathan Worth recently, constant work can help me refine my ideas and work through them. So I would like to get out there and shoot some work and also add after effects to my work to creat more dimensions to it.

A MEDIA OBJECT THAT SHOWS MY POINT OF VIEW

Introducing Exercise 1. Choose a media object that tells us about the world from your point of view, post 500 words about it.

We have been asked to comment on our chosen media object in two ways: What does this media object tell us about ourselves and what is its wider context?

This is a Youtube post, posted on the 8th October 2006. It is a compilation of re-edited clips from the Disney classic ‘Mary Poppins’.

Info from the post:

This contains the musical piece “A Violent Attack” composed by Caine Davidson for the film ‘An American Haunting,’ “Stay Awake” written by Richard and Robert Sherman for Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins,’ and stock sounds from iMovie. Clips filmed with a Penasonic MiniDV camera and edited on iMovie.

I have chosen this media object for a number of reasons. I want to use it to reflect the way I think about th media, all the stories have already been told and we as practitioners are just finding new ways to tell them. But we are telling these stories in more varied ways switching genres in this case.

I also wanted to reflect that I don’t just look at the objects and texts that are produced by the mainstream companies, I am interested and influenced by other peoples perceptions and interpretations of the world and the things they come into contact with and create as a result.

I find myself heavily draw to surreal fiction such as horror, this I think is because I both enjoy escapism and also use it to interpret everyday horrors  into something my brain can process because with fiction as I can tell myself it is not real. I am however aware that there is no smoke without fire.

I found this re-edited version to be sadistic but also satisfying I will explain why. I found it sadistic because the original intention of ‘Mary Poppins’ is to delight and amaze the audience with this nanny who can get children to behave, tidy and bring families together.

This is still evident in the re-edited version but it gives it a new connotation, one of sick pleasure in the acts the re-edited version depicts a different view of the nannies magical persuasion over the children. Looking at it in a wider current context the safety of our children is widely reported in the media with the abduction of children, abuse and misuse of positions of power like the current Nursery pornography, Vanessa George scandal. She is portrayed in one article by the guardian.co.uk as having led and outwardly respectable life, educated, and without a family of her own put in a position of power only to abuse children.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2009/oct/01/childprotection-ukcrime

I also described this piece as satisfying because as I mentioned earlier I am drawn to fiction with the illusion that it is just a story and not linked to reality but as previously discussed this can be heavily debated. To those who just consume media without thinking about its influences and wider contexts could easily see this as nothing more than an imaginative fun poking at ‘Mary Poppins’.

The combination of re-editing, sound and added text help create an easy transition into the fiction realm as when in real life do you encounter a dangerous person or situation and hear scary background music. They help of stereotypical ideals about the horror genre help this piece work well as entertainment fiction. You could easily however remake this Youtube post with live footage and still images form the local news and have a possibly even more affective piece.

To conclude I would like this to represent my interest in non mainstream work, the influences that society have on my work and thought and my responce to all of these things.
